Welcome to our Web site...

....The home of the Eltham Otters here on the world wide web...

Our club has been established since late 1978 when several members of a local Diving club got together to form a branch of the National Snorkellers Club. Over the years much has changed but the ethos of the club remains- to give an opportunity to youngsters to learn and experience the excitement that is the sport of Snorkel Diving.

We hope you enjoy browsing our pages and hope to see you again in the near future.

The Eltham Centre suffered a fire between Saturday 13th &Sunday 14th February 2010. At present the centre remains closed to the public and also to the clubs that use it. We are being told that until further notice this will remain in place.

Our Snorkelling Club will therefore continue to operate on Sunday mornings only at the Shooters Hill post 16 campus.

As soon as I have an update I will post it on here.......

Update on the Friday Club situation

Tuesday 16th February 2010

Initial incident

Following a fire at the Eltham Centre on Saturday 13th February the building has sustained damage to its electrical systems. The fire damage was mainly to the leisure side of the building affecting the ground and level 1 areas and an investigation by the fire brigade has taken some time to complete.

Contact between club and the Local Authority

I first received a call on Sunday morning from a member of the Local Authority whose responsibility is for all aquatic provision within the borough and they have promised to keep me informed, updating me when there is any news.

The current situation is that once this initial investigation has ended then the Council can send in its own people to make assessments and only after this can work be carried out to repair the building. At present we believe that there will be NO CLUB for at least two weeks. Following this it may be closed for a period of time due to the repairs and then finally a period while the pool is drained, cleaned and refilled and the chemical balance re-established.  The total closure time at present is therefore impossible to state.

If there is an extended amount of time taken for all this then it maybe possible for the club to be temporarily re-housed at the waterfront pool in Woolwich. However, it would need to be a similar time to the slot we have now, but this is not being worried about just yet.

In the mean time club will continue on Sunday mornings at the Shooters Hill pool, Red Lion Lane.

The pool isn’t the only place we can teach…

As for those who cannot make a Sunday club I can only share your upset at the unfortunate incident that has put a temporary stop to your snorkelling practice. I have been giving some though to what we could do and decided that this is the perfect opportunity to catch up on the ‘other’ side of our snorkelling learning  and have organised the theory sessions to start on Saturdays. These are being held at the Teviot Rangers football ground, Swing gate lane, Plumstead. http://webfronter.com/bexley/teviot/

These sessions are open to everyone and do form part of the BSAC snorkelling awards. The date of the first session will be posted on here soon. I shall also post full information about how these run when I have the start date.

Can I also encourage members who have access to facebook to keep an eye on the club page there as I can update it faster than the club website.

So for now it’s a case of wait and see. Please be patient and I promise to update you as soon as I can.

Bye for now,

Stefan Algar

Branch Leader.

Congratulations to St Marys School in Eltham

whose pupils attended the 'Try Snorkelling' events during February.

We invited the pupils from both years 3 and 4 up to our club so they may experience wearing the basic equipment of Mask, Finns and Snorkel and receive some instruction in there use.

We were very proud to have such well mannered young people visit our club who showed some excellent abilities in the water environment.

We look forward to working with the school again in the future.

Our Club used the old Eltham Pools for most of the time it has been around but last year we had to move to the new Eltham Centre when they Local Authority chose to close the old pools. The new facilities unfortunately do not meet all our requirements and we have been looking around to see if there are other pools that may be able to host the club. We are actively pursuing this and will report back to the web site as soon as we have some news.

If you would like some more information with regards to the move then please email us at the link below.
